Closing Ceremony of the 6th Batch Basic Search and Rescue Training

The Department of Local Governance and Disaster Management (DLGDM) has successfully completed the 6th Batch Basic Search and Rescue Training for 52 Desuups at the National Search and Rescue Training Centre (NSARTC), Tashigatshel. The training program held from January 6 to January 18, 2025, concluded on the evening of 18th January 2025 with a formal closing ceremony graced by the Honorable Home Minister as Chief Guest, Director General of DLGDM, Deputy Chief of Police from the Royal Bhutan Police Headquarters, and the Superintendent of Police of NSARTC, other esteemed guest and dignitaries. Their presence underscored the importance of the training and the commitment of our leaders to enhancing the capabilities of disaster response teams in Bhutan.

Over the span of 14 days, participants underwent rigorous training that equipped them with essential skills and knowledge necessary for effective search and rescue operations in emergencies. The program was generously funded by the European Union, highlighting international support for Bhutan’s disaster management initiatives.

In light of Bhutan's unique geographical and climatic challenges, their role as first responders is vital. The skills Desuups Trainees have acquired during this training – from essential knots to swift water rescue techniques, from firefighting operations to psychological first aid – are pivotal in our national disaster management strategy. The knowledge they have gained equips them not only to save lives but also to build resilient communities, an integral aspect of our nation’s well-being.

This training marks not just an end, but also a new beginning. As they step into their roles with enhanced capabilities, they will contribute significantly to establishing Search and Rescue teams in every Dzongkhag, Dungkhag, and Thromde. We are confident that their efforts will collectively strengthen our disaster response framework and enhance preparedness across the country.

As we look ahead, we eagerly anticipate the upcoming India-Bhutan Youth Friendship Camp at the Officer Training Academy in Gaya, India. This initiative highlights our shared commitment to collaboration, learning, and strengthening ties between our nations in the times of disaster management and beyond.

During the ceremony, the Chief Guest also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of our Desuup trainees and trainers, emphasizing the vital role of Desuups in ensuring community resilience in times of crisis. The training not only enhanced the participants’ proficiency but also fostered a spirit of teamwork and national service.

As we move forward, the DLGDM remains committed to building a well-prepared and responsive disaster management framework in Bhutan. We express our heartfelt gratitude to all partners involved in making this training a success, including the European Union for their continued support.
