Such training program in the country is the first of its kind.  It is organized based on the outcome of the mid-term review of the Sendai Framework which emphasizes the criticality of adopting a whole-of-society approach for the implementation inclusive disaster risk reduction (DRR) especially at the local government level. Additionally, the review underscores the urgency of involving all segments of society, including the often-overlooked individuals with disabilities, in disaster risk assessment, preparedness, response and recovery efforts and highlights the need to strengthen capacities for local inclusive DRR. The main objective of the training program is to build knowledge and capacities of the local government (Thromde) officials and key stakeholders on sub-national disaster risk reduction and resilience, particularly on the inclusion of persons with disabilities in disaster risk management. It also enables the participation of persons with disabilities and disability organizations in local disaster risk reduction planning process.

The three-day training program is attended by officials from four Thromdes (Gelephu, Phuentsholing, Samdrupjongkhar and Thimphu), Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), UNRCO, and DLGDM. The training is facilitated by Ms. Mutarika Pruksapong, Programme Management Officer of UNDRR GETI and Ms. Sunisa Soodrak, Associate Programme Management Officer of UNDRR ROAP.
